Here's what one cottager had to say about their experience with the program:

"To date, we have let more than half of our shoreline (about 60 feet) go back to its natural state merely by stopping cutting the lawn.  Initially, we roped off an area about 15 feet deep, but we have already increased that amount to about 20 feet.  The wildflowers were awesome!  Next spring I plan to plant four to six shrubs and bushes from the list that is in the info package into that area.  Sue (Shoreline Advisor) was wonderfully helpful in identifying species that she thought would fit our needs."

Solutions for Shoreline Erosion

Some steep and problematic shorelines require more attention than others when dealing with erosion.  Learn how to protect your shoreline with the most effective methods and techniques. Consider bioengineering instead of armour stone and poured concrete retaining walls both of which will fail over time.

Above: A 'vegetated geo-grid'.  Live stakings are installed into the bank re-establishing riparian vegetation.  Biodegradable filter cloth (coconut fibres) to retain the upland soil allowing the live stakings to establish root systems over time (approx. 2 years).  The root systems of these stakings are self repairing and will serve as anchors for the shoreline.  Good for shorelines that have been undercut at the waterline or that suffer from slope failure.

Shoreline Advisor Program

About the Program

The Alliance is providing free and site-specific consultation services to individual shoreline property owners who are looking for inexpensive, effective and natural ways to protect their shoreline and their waterfront investments.

How It Works

At the invitation of the owner, a trained and qualified Shoreline Advisor is lead on a tour of the property providing advice and guidance pertaining to:

It is up to the discretion of the property owner as to what aspects of their site is addressed by the Advisor. At the end of the visit the Advisor provides a list of recommendations, a resource kit containing information on topics covered during the visit, and a list of local service providers to help them take action.
